Dell’s Human Resource Rotation Program (HRRP) is designed to develop motivated and intellectually curious undergraduate and graduate students into well-rounded HR professionals who will lead the future of HR at Dell.
Our team members in the HRRP rotate through three one-year assignments across the HR function. The rotations provide team members the opportunity to dive deep into each functional area and contribute to the overall goals of the company through projects like annual compensation planning and strategy, optimizing processes in our regional shared services, and providing innovative solutions & thought leadership in HR business partner roles.
To strengthen our program participants’ development, we had our first HRRP Summit to provide focused training on emerging skills, bringing rotation participants across the globe together with HR leadership, and providing team member networking opportunities. The HRRP Summit’s focus this year was “HR of the Future”, bringing both internal and external speakers to share where HR is heading at Dell and in the overall industry.
Our first external speaker was Bersin by Deloitte’s VP of HR Research Leader who presented on Design Thinking and the Future of HR. The presentation turned into a discussion around how Dell HR can and has already started to utilize cutting-edge technologies to execute quickly and optimize solutions for our clients. Prior to the summit, all HRRP participants took the Strengths Finder Assessment in preparation for a workshop focused on how we can leverage our strengths to be better HR professionals.

“I love that we have built this opportunity to learn and connect into the rotation program. The session on ‘Leading with Strengths’ really resonated with me,” said Katie O’Connor, 2nd-year rotation participant. “In the rotation program, we are often presented with new and challenging situations. Through the session, we discussed how to best leverage our individual strengths to start from a place of confidence and optimism.”
Gartner presented on the Future of HR with Big Data Digitalization.
For our internal speakers, we heard from our new Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Brian Reaves about how the role of diversity is changing our business and why D&I should be viewed as a business imperative.
“I really enjoyed hearing from the new Chief D&I Officer on the efforts Dell is making to continue growing our diverse workforce and encouraging women in STEM,” said first-year participant, Sidney Novikoff.
Then, our VP of Legal Counsel had a conversation with the group about the future of HR with changing political and legal landscapes. Lastly, we had a lively discussion with our SVP of Talent & Culture, regarding the future of performance reviews and learning in the workplace.
Giving back to the community has always been a part of who we are at Dell. After all of the speakers, the group had a community service workshop where we created blankets for a local Children’s Hospital.
Then, two teams of 2nd-year participants presented their capstone projects to the HR Leadership Team (HRLT) and HRRP peers. Finally, we wrapped up the action-packed week to celebrate our HRRP graduates before they move onto their full-time roles.
Throughout the week, we had happy hours and dinners with current HRRP participants, alumni, and leaders to provide valuable networking opportunities to further build relationships. The HR Summit succeeded in its goal to develop our HRRP participants for the future of HR and bring our HRRP community together – we are already looking forward to next year!
